历史
乔治市在1957年1月1日由英女王伊丽莎白二世殿下授予皇家宪章正式宣布乔治市为马来亚联合邦的第一个城市（新加坡是在1951年升格为市的）。然而，1976年由于当地政府整顿，乔治市市政厅和槟岛乡区地方政府合并组成槟岛市议会。
