在瓜達爾卡維爾島戰役初期，美國海軍陸戰隊成功登陸瓜達爾卡維爾島，控制島上的機場，建立了韓德生基地（Henderson Field，位於今天的霍尼亞拉國際機場）。但是日軍利用海軍艦炮為掩護，企圖重新奪回此地，因此爆發這場戰役。
