背景
肯德里克·拉馬爾為電影《黑豹》創作原聲帶，電影導演瑞恩·庫格勒挑選拉馬爾因為「他藝術主題與我們在電影中探索的主題一致[1]。」拉馬爾最初只會為電影製作幾首歌曲，但他看了電影的大部分後，他決定創作這張專輯。
2017年12月22日，拉馬爾發佈自己的單曲〈Love〉，錄影帶中有一個隱藏彩蛋，場記板上寫着「B.Panther Soundtrack Coming Soon」，暗示他參與了《黑豹》原聲帶[2]。
