威廉·丹佛
威廉·丹佛（英語： 1933年11月27日－，出生于美国肯塔基州的路易維爾[1]）是一个美国考古学家，专长于圣经时代以色列和近东历史。1975年至2002年间，他担任美国亚利桑那大学的近东考古和人类学教授。
学术生涯
退休后，丹佛经常在关于圣经历史性的问题上写作。 他批判否定任何圣经记载的历史价值的“圣经疑古派”。但他也远不是圣经字面主义的支持者。他曾这样写：
我并不把圣经当做圣典来读… 我实际上甚至不是有神论者。我一直以来的观点，特别是在我最近写的几本书中，首先圣经叙述实际上是 '故事,' 经常是虚构的，几乎总是宣传性的，但这些故事常包含可靠的历史信息。我的立场很难使我成为 '圣经信古派.'[2]
今天的考古学必须挑战和证实圣经叙事。圣经里的一些事历史上确实发生了，一些并没有。关于亚伯拉罕、摩西、约书亚和所罗门的圣经叙事可能反应了一些关于人名和地名的历史记忆，但圣经描述的当时的历史背景是不真实的，与考古证据相矛盾。[3]
