约翰·米尔诺

米尔诺出生于美国新泽西州奥兰治。在普林斯顿大学就读本科期间，他就在1949年和1950年参加了普特南数学竞赛，并意外地只用几天的时间证明出了法利-米尔诺定理[1]。

之后，他在进入普林斯顿大学的研究生院，并完成了论文《》。获得博士学位后，他继续在普林斯顿工作。

1962年，米尔诺因他在微分拓扑领域的工作获得菲尔兹奖。之后，他又获得了美国国家科学奖章（1967年）、Leroy P Steele Prize（1982年，2004年，2011年）、沃尔夫奖（1989年）。他还著有许多出色的书籍。这些书通俗，简洁而又严谨。

2011年，他因其“在拓扑，几何和代数的开拓性发现”（“”）[2]获得了阿贝尔奖。作为回应，他告诉《新科学家》，“这感觉非常好”(“”)，并说“早上6点的电话总是让人感到意外。”（“”）[3]
