事發起共经过13天的围困，墨西哥軍隊將領安東尼奧·羅培茲·德·聖塔·安那统率的墨西哥部队对圣安东尼奥德贝卡尔附近的阿拉莫城（今位于美国得克萨斯州的圣安东尼奥市）发动袭击，造成駐守的所有德克萨斯士兵死亡。聖塔·安那在战斗中的残酷手段刺激了许多德州人，使得德克萨斯移民和美国的冒险者加入德克萨斯的军队。1836年4月21日，墨西哥军队在圣哈辛托战役中战败，翌日主帥本人也被山姆·休斯敦將軍所率領的部隊俘虏。
