分類歷史
鳥龍鳥科是於1985年成立，包含了一些最初被認為是細小獸腳亞目恐龍的化石。[5]
路易斯·恰佩（Luis M. Chiappe）後來將鳥龍鳥科重置到鳥綱及反鳥亞綱之下，指它們的第三趾向背面橫凸得很厲害、第三趾滑車內側邊緣明顯突出、及蹠骨兩側扁平及呈J狀。[6]他進一步將鳥龍鳥科定義為內烏肯鳥及鳥龍鳥的共同祖先，與及所有後裔。於2008年，鳥龍鳥科重新被定義為鳥龍鳥及所有相關的屬，而疏於長翼鳥、戈壁鳥或中國鳥。[4]

恰佩等人發現鳥龍鳥科的拇趾是完全反向及有一大爪，顯示它們可以站在樹上。[7]
