艾蒂特·史坦茵

艾蒂特·史坦茵，1891年出生於德國伯萊斯勞的猶太人富商家庭。由於她是家中11個孩子中最年幼的，並且在希伯來曆中最神聖的一天贖罪日出生，她深得母親喜愛。她的父親在她幼年時去世，母親獨自支撐家庭，並給予她完整的教育，將她送到弗罗茨瓦夫大學學習哲學、心理學、歷史及德文。[3]

艾蒂特1913年前往哥廷根，成為胡塞爾的學生。1916年在胡塞爾的指導下完成以「同理心」（Empathy）与胡塞尔的现象学為題的論文，在佛萊堡大學取得哲學博士學位，之後成為胡塞爾的助教。她後來曾四次爭取大學教席，但因為是女性而沒有得到胡塞爾的支持。

1921年暑假，她閱讀聖德蘭．亞維拉的自傳後，深受感動，並於翌年受洗為天主教徒。1933年，她加入了赤足加爾默羅隱修會（聖衣會），成為修女，取名十字架的德蘭本篤（Teresa Benedicta of the Cross）。

納粹黨奪取德國政權後開始迫害猶太人，最後她於1942年在奧斯威辛集中營，與同伴在瓦斯室被毒氣致死。[3][4]

1998年10月11日，她被教宗若望·保祿二世冊封為聖人。
