他自2010年開始擔任佛吉尼亞州的州長，之前曾供職美國陸軍并當過法官。他是共和黨內堅定的保守派人士，強烈反對墮胎并支持槍支權利。
2013年受限于佛吉尼亞州憲法，他不能競選連任，之後的州長選舉由民主黨候選人特里·麦考利夫勝出。
2014年因腐败受审。鲍伯·麦克唐纳及妻子莫林·麦克唐纳被指控从一名富商那里收受价值16万5千多美元的礼物和贷款，反过来推介富商公司的产品作为报答。[1] 其后被判处2年监禁和2年监外看管。[2]
